Frank's Story: Searching for More Time

At LDS Employment Resource Services (LDS Jobs), we'll help you become gainfully employed through education and networking with local companies.

Jose Francisco “Frank” Reyes just wanted a little more time to be with his family. With a bachelor’s degree in marketing, he figured he would have a stable job with stable hours and be able to support his family well, but he did not have a fixed work schedule. It often switched between morning, evening, and night shifts. Many days, he left early in the morning and didn’t come home until late at night. The only available day he had—Sunday—he spent doing service for the Church and visiting people.

In addition to that, he felt that with his skills and experience he could be making more money. Overall, he found himself unsatisfied with life because he was not achieving his goals.

Many times at Church, Frank saw a flier about the Church Employment Resource Services circulating during the classes. He had a job, so he didn’t think he needed to go, but he kept hearing how they could help employed members seek a better income or gain new skills. One day he decided to see if the employment center could help him.

When Frank went to the center, he signed up for the Career Workshop. Once he completed it, he signed up again. And again. He found that the workshop was extremely effective in helping him realize what he wanted to do in his life.

He set goals to improve his interviewing and negotiation skills. And he realized that he had the capacity and ability to improve those skills and get the job he dreamed of.

“Employment Resource Services helped me to perfect my goals and accomplish the things that I wanted and that I was praying for with my family,” Frank said. “They didn’t tell me that I had to do this or do that, but they helped me see I had the capacity to do what I wanted to do.”

As for his interviewing skills, Frank developed strong power statements describing past work experience and qualifications. He had ideas of what he could talk about before, but after practicing these statements, he learned to say them in a clear, sensible way. He memorized the statements so he could use them effectively in his interviews. When Frank went to a job interview, the interviewer was impressed by the strong statements Frank used to describe his expert qualifications. His preparation for the interview and confidence in himself helped him land the job.

“You can achieve anything,” Frank said. “But it has a price, and that price is preparation. Employment Resource Services helped me to be better prepared. You can go to the center and be confident that you can overcome any kind of challenge and then reach your goals.”

Frank worked on his negotiation skills by practicing the techniques he learned in The Career Workshop. Through the workshop, he learned how to discuss his salary needs and how to justify them through his past work experience, achievements, education, and goals for the future.

When he got a new job offer, he negotiated the salary. He committed to certain actions as an employee in order to achieve his income goal. Now as a manager of about 15 people in an automobile detail and paint shop, he makes sure they have the incentives they need to work and be happy in their jobs as well.

But the greatest blessing that has come to Frank’s life is the gift of time.

“I feel very happy because I have a better job with a better income,” Frank said. “I am very happy because I can spend more time with my son and wife.”
