Edgar's Story: They Taught Me through Love and Expertise

At Self-Reliance Services (LDS Jobs), we'll help you become gainfully employed through education and networking with local companies.

When Edgar and his family relocated for a new job, they felt a warm welcome from members of their neighborhood. There was something special about the new place they immediately called home. Within a few months, Edgar’s new company announced they would be moving his position to another state.

Although he enjoyed his new job and company, he and his family felt very good about their new home and had a strong desire to stay. This would require finding a new job in a highly specialized industry with limited opportunities, which would be a challenge even for Edgar, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in manufacturing engineering and has extensive experience with organizations throughout the world.

A friend recommended that Edgar visit the Employment Resource Center for help in his job search. After attending the two-day career workshop, he was invited to enroll in the Accelerated Job Search (AJS) program.  He immediately saw value in the program as he refined his power statements and “Me in 30 Seconds” statement.  Each day, he woke up early, dressed professionally, and practiced critical skills related to networking, job searching, and interviewing.

“Going to the Accelerated Job Search program every day helped me feel like I was still working,” Edgar said. “We prayed, supported each other and developed the skills that were vital to my success.”

While he was participating in the AJS program and hoping to secure a good job that matched his education and qualifications, he and his family were also being introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were so impressed with their neighbors’ love and kindness that they asked to learn more about the Church. Soon, they were taking lessons from the full-time missionaries.

“During this time, I learned that I couldn’t find success without faith,” Edgar said. “The people that I was surrounded by—both in the AJS and my neighborhood—taught me to always be grateful and humble. I knew that if I worked hard and believed, then I would be blessed.”

Within two and a half weeks, Edgar received three job offers. One of the offers was from the company he was really hoping for. He accepted the position and was very satisfied with the pay and circumstances of the job. It allowed him and his family to stay in the neighborhood they loved so dearly.

“The AJS program provided me with the skill set I needed to get the job that I wanted,” Edgar said. “I was very experienced in my field but I did not know how to sell myself and present myself in the best possible way. Without the AJS program, I don’t know where I would be right now.”

Edgar and his family were baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints shortly after he secured his full-time job. His experience with his new neighbors and with the staff and volunteers in the AJS program showed him examples of people and programs that are sincerely trying to help people. He is now committed to serving others in order to pay forward the love and expertise that he and his family have received.
